Does a Pharmacy Technician Career Offer Stability?

The recent shake up in the world economy was a wake up call for everyone. People who thought the economy couldn’t have been better, learned a hard lesson: The economy can and does fall when it is dependent on a few. A few months down the line, the ripple effects of this “mayhem” are still felt in many homes, families and companies. Many professionals were let go, “voluntarily retired”, or outright laid off. Companies such as Panasonic closed down over 200 plants in a short 3 months, while Citigroup, the parent company of Citibank and other subsidiaries has plans to lay off at least five thousand of its workers before the end of the 3rd quarter.

For some people, the damage done was so irreparable they had to resort selling their properties, cars, assets, withdrawing their kids from schools and even suicide as a last option. The present situation has got a lot of young adults and youths thinking more in terms of financially stable jobs that also has the potential of a lifelong career. One of these careers is the pharmacy technician.

While many people were being laid off their jobs in the banking and finance sectors, more pharmacy technicians were being hired to meet the rising demand for more hands and professionals in the health care sector. According to various medical news sources, the demand for pharmacy technicians is gradually increasing as more people fall sick nowadays compared to the ’70s and ’80s. Estimated surveys and statistics also show that as more people fall ill and more hands are needed, the demand for their services is bound to increase over the next 10 years.

For many people, the profession of the pharmacy technician is often placed on the same pedestal as a pharmacist. This however, is not true. Pharmacy technicians are like assistants to the pharmacists. They work alongside the pharmacist functioning and work as record keepers, aides to the pharmacists, getting patient records, and ensure make sure that all prescriptions are verified before delivery to the patients, keep and preserve medical files or data and can help in the application of the right labels to all prescriptions tendered.

Pharmacy technicians can work in the groceries, nursing homes, pharmacy shops, retails pharmacy shops, online pharmacies, hospitals, drug producing factories and everywhere the services of pharmacists are required. While they earn less than pharmacists, their annual salaries vary between twenty five thousand dollars a year to fifty thousand dollars ($25000 – $50000). And recent trends show that the salaries will increase with time as the demand for their services increase too.

Becoming a pharmacy technician entails hard work and discipline. Various schools offer the course both offline and online. Training under a pharmacist can get any interested individual a job. However, most employers prefer some form of formal education. Thus creating two groups of pharmacy technicians: Certified and uncertified. An individual can become certified by writing any of the following examinations:

1. ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians). OR
2. PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board)

Career options

*Retail
The first pharmacies were retail shops where medicines and tonics were sold for treatment of ailments and illnesses. These pharmacists mixed compounds and ingredients according to the patients needs. Pharmacists then and today have the knowledge about medicines, what they can cure or ease, and their effects when taken with other medicines or foods. Pharmacists in retail pharmacies dispense medications, counsel patients on the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications, and advise physicians about patients’ medication therapy. They can counsel patients about common health topics such as diet, exercise, and stress reduction. As drugstores also carry other medical related supplies, the pharmacist is there as a healthcare professional able to advice on the purchase and use of medical equipment such as crutches and braces.

*Healthcare
Pharmacists are an important part of the Healthcare system. Each hospital, clinic, nursing and convalescent home has pharmacists who will take the doctors prescription and devise a medicine regimen for treatment. Hospitals have a number of pharmacists who prescribe the medications and arrange daily dosages for each patient.

Insurance and benefits companies also require pharmacists to monitor prescriptions and treatments for reimbursement purposes. Pharmacists are also responsible for creating medicinal regimens and assist in establishing process and procedures for review and approvals for treatments.

*Pharmaceutical
Pharmacists and other related scientists are the founders of most of the modern pharmaceutical companies in the world. In earlier times, pharmacies sold medicines that were mixed or compounded in the store for each person. As the types of mixtures increased and other medicines were found to be effective against certain illnesses and ailments, pharmacists started companies to manufacture medicines that can be sold to a wider number of persons with the same ailment. Over time these companies became the first pharmaceuticals. Pharmacists are employed today in the pharmaceutical industry not only for research and development but for education of the consumers’ of the medicines such as retail pharmacy chains and insurance companies, and doctors.

*Other fields
Pharmacists are increasingly pursing careers in other fields. Pharmacists work for the government, veterinary medicine, managed care organizations, public health care services, the armed services, or pharmacy associations. Pharmacists are also employed full time or part time as school faculty, teaching classes or performing research in a wide range of areas.

Warehouse-in-a-Box to enhance pharmaceutical distribution network

Resolve, an Imperial Logistics group company, through its division Resolve Capacity, completed its latest Warehouse-in-a-Box in Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire.
The new Warehouse-in-a-Box in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, measures 4,095 m² and is pharmaceutical compliant.
The new Warehouse-in-a-Box in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, measures 4,095 m² and is pharmaceutical compliant.
The contract was awarded in July 2014 to Imperial Health Sciences, for which Resolve Capacity is a service provider, and was implemented in Côte d’Ivoire on behalf of New Public Health Pharmacy (NPSP), the organisation responsible for the distribution of pharmaceutical products for public health institutions operated by the country’s Ministry of Health.

Along with its partners Turnkey Infrastructure Solutions, Resolve Capacity implemented its unique modular infrastructure solution for this $5.8 million, 4,095 m² warehouse project, which includes administration facilities, etc.

Côte d’Ivoire pharmaceutical network enhanced

“We broke ground in October 2014, and were pleased to hand the warehouse over to NPSP in January 2016,” says Arno Haigh, managing executive at Resolve Capacity. “This new warehouse will significantly enhance the pharmaceutical distribution network in Côte d’Ivoire, as well as storage capacity for the distribution of quality medicines.”

The construction of the prefabricated warehouse is the result of joint funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Global Fund for the Fight against Tuberculosis, AIDS and Malaria.

The new warehouse in Abidjan will allow for significantly increased pharmaceutical compliant storage capacity, and will help streamline the provision of HIV/AIDS-related and other health products. The number of people on antiretroviral therapy is increasing rapidly, which means an increased requirement for drugs and supplies for screening volume, clinical laboratory testing and support. Storage, therefore, needs to be increased at a national level, and this warehouse will allow the NPSP to better organise its storage system and distribution to ensure continuous availability of essential medicines.

A unique solution to African challenges

At the ground-breaking ceremony, His Excellency Terence McCulley, Ambassador of the United States of America in Côte d’Ivoire, said that this effort is evidence of the confidence that partners have in the NPSP in its role as a pillar in the distribution system of medicines and health products in Côte d’Ivoire.

“Many African countries struggle with supply chain infrastructure, and warehousing in particular,” says Haigh. “Existing warehouses are not effective, with shortcomings in racking and cooling systems in particular. Warehouse-in-a-Box brings a unique solution to countries that need support in their healthcare initiatives, helping overcome infrastructure challenges and improving supply chains.”

The design enables the rapid commission and installation of a pharmaceutical-grade and compliant prefabricated warehouse with all the componentry required to deliver a total solution, packed and ready for delivery in 40 ft containers. It addresses the lack of supply chain infrastructure, limited storage space and lack of quality storage facilities. Suitable for both urban and rural settings, the standards and operational benchmarks are aligned with international supply chain principles.

“Along with economic growth in Africa comes increased pressure on supply chain infrastructure, creating challenging business conditions and difficulty in matching supply with demand,” concludes Haigh. “If we want to execute supply chain design effectively in Africa, we need creative and flexible solutions.”

Rhoads Pharmacy Uses High Tech Pharmacy Robot on Main Street

Rhoads Pharmacy in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, is, like its creed, “where hometown is a philosophy, not just a destination”. Established in 1931 and re-christened Rhoads Pharmacy in 1953, the pharmacy has the distinction of also being a gift shop, marketplace, and gallery. Hence, the locals have come to think of it as a home away from home, and patients have been relying on its services for decades. Automatic Dispensing System (ADS) technology has been able to make things even better for current owner and pharmacist Dave Lutz, who took over ownership of the pharmacy with his wife, Jeanne, in 1973. Lutz has a large customer base of over 15,000 patients, and most of his staff (including four pharmacist technicians and ten support staff) has been with Rhoads for over 25 years. Since implementing the pharmacy robot (affectionately known as “Flo” to the staff) two years ago, Lutz says he and his staff’s relationship with patients has gotten even better. The robot is programmed to cap, photograph, count, and sort pills, thus acting—in some ways literally—as the hands of personnel. “We named our robot Florence because we wanted to use the nickname Flo. There can be low flow or high flow, but there’s got to be flow. And the flow of what this technology has been able to accomplish is definitely unprecedented, as far as it relates to our time management,” said Lutz. Automated Dispensing Maintains Accuracy in Counting Pills “Before Flo, on a typical workday, we were counting up to 12,000- 15,000 pills a day, which is a huge number,” says Lutz. “And it was all by hand. Now Flo does 65% of that. The time she’s freed up for the staff is just incredible. We can’t imagine not having the ADS technology now. It’s made all the difference.” “ADS is ‘third generation technology’, in my phrase”, says Lutz. “And by that, I mean that it does things that nothing else before it has done. There are pharmacy robots that don’t cap the prescriptions like Flo does, that don’t take photos of the prescription to ensure accuracy. This is the only technology that does all that. As a pharmacist, it has given me enormous peace of mind and made me feel better about the safety and accuracy of what we do, which is always, of course, our first priority. ” Ensuring correct pill counts is of paramount importance, as is making certain that prescriptions have been labeled and distributed correctly. The complexities of handling medications are, paradoxically, simplified in complex technology that is easy to learn and use. Pharmacy Staff has More Time to Develop Relationships with Patients “Our endeavor is to create a “hometown” environment, just like our logo,” says Lutz. “We want to make the community feel like they’re dealing with a friend. When it comes to talking about their health conditions and the medications they require, customers are very particular, and say they’re often very uncomfortable going somewhere else. They put their trust in me and are appreciative of my counseling and suggestions. ADS technology has made it possible for me to go out on the floor, to actually talk to them, because I don’t have to spend that time doing what the robot is able to do for us now.” The ADS system has enabled pharmacies to be much more than just a business where people come to pick up their medications. Now, it’s possible for them to better balance technical work that requires scrupulous attention to detail with essential, one-on-one communication with patients. Superhuman technology for a human profession “I like to say that the technology is superhuman”, says Lutz. “But at the same the ADS is something that lets the human aspects of being a pharmacist shine through. Every pharmacist should have access to this. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the responsible thing to do. In my book—and surely in my staff’s—ADS is the future of this industry.” ADS might indeed be considered a breakthrough in the industry, as the system is able to handle such high and diverse volumes of medications without cross-contamination, and multitask so effectively, safely, and accurately. Robots like Flo represent the changing face of the hometown pharmacy. The remarkable ways in which they’ve been able to integrate the most important aspects of the profession are only beginning to be understood. As this technology continues to improve and become affordable more pharmacists will begin to embrace ADS robotics. They will discover how it can help them be better at what they do and the horizons of the industry will begin to expand in ways they never have before. The first thing that you need to remember is that the general title of pharmacy tech is one that can encompass very different positions and responsibilities depending on where you work. Depending on what sort of office work you are going to be doing and where you are going to be working, you will also need to work on patient paperwork as well as insurance claims.
